RIAFP – Who we are

The Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians (RIAFP) is a 189-active, 13 Life, 50 Resident, and 400 student member of the Rhode Island affiliate of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the largest primary care physician organization in the United States.

Our organization supports ongoing physician education, works with residents in primary care, and advocates public policies to improve the health care system. We work with the Rhode Island Medical Society and the Rhode Island Department of Health, to achieve those aims.

Our members staff private practices and community health centers, deliver babies, make home visits, and treat patients at every hospital in Rhode Island. Our doctors work with schools, day care centers, nursing homes, and care for entire families from every community in the state.

Our Mission Statement

The Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians exists to promote the health of the patients, families and communities of Rhode Island by advancing the specialty of family medicine through education and advocacy.

About Family Medicine

Family physicians see people in their own communities, and treat men, women and children of all ages, races and economic circumstances.  Though family practitioners represent only about 7 percent of the state’s physicians, they care for nearly a third of all Rhode Island children and more than one third of all Rhode Island adults. Family medicine is a primary health care specialty in which individuals and families are provided continuing and comprehensive health care

Why is Family Medicine so important to Rhode Island?

Primary care is an important but neglected approach in the United States. As a result, the equity and effectiveness of our health care system is compromised.

Rhode Island’s health care system has fallen victim to these national trends. We have a hospital and specialty dominated health care system, though we are a relatively low income state, and lack the means to support the excess costs that a hospital and specialty dominated medical culture incur.
